Victoria Hutson Huntley

Huntley was born in New Jersey and studied art at the Parsons School of Design in New York City and the Art Students League with John Sloan and Max Weber. Her early works in lithography dealt with urban and industrial scenes. Carl Zigrosser organized her first solo exhibition of work in 1930 at the Weyhe Galleries in New York. During the 1940's, she and her husband moved to Winter Park, Florida, where she taught art at the Rollins College. While in Florida, Huntley became enchanted with the natural beauty of the Everglades and received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1948 to create drawings and lithographs on the subject. Her Everglades lithographs were exhibited at the Kennedy Galleries in 1949 and were noted by the critics as excellent and dramatic images in black and white tones. She was elected an associate member of the National Academy of Design in 1947. Her works are in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, Metropolitan Museum, Boston Museum, Philadelphia Museum, Brooklyn Museum, and the New York Public Library, as well as many other institutions. Huntley passed away in 1971, but will always be remembered as a constant advocate of the lithographic process, writing essays and articles on its usage.
